Oh well, I'll keep plugging away when I can.

I find that I am realizing more and more plants that didn't make it through all of our winter freezes from the past year. Yesterday I realized that all the Fleabane was gone from the Olivia & Drayton's Memorial Garden. In the memorial garden alone we are missing, Gaura, Cleome, Diamond Frost Euphorbia, most of the First Love Dianthus, even a couple roses. I'm really disappointed about that. But alas, a gardener's heart gets use to this and learns pick up the pieces and move on. I already have some new ideas! So, it's just new opportunity to plant some more and re-decide my layout. No problem with that!

This memorial garden has given me hours of torment over the years, just trying to figure out what I want it to look like and feel like. I haven't accomplished it yet, but I AM getting closer. I may have to rip out some of the "bones" that my husband planted in their in the beginning. Some, such as the Loropetalum seem to be taking over way too much space; much more than I was willing to give up. I still have to give this garden much more thought. It's just so important to me. I may never get it the way I want it, but I sure enjoy working on it. We have bought and replaced at least 5 different types of daylilies in this baby garden. I want a true pink and keep getting peach, yellow, purple or salmon, everything but pink. I'll keep trying! Also, all the Pink Four O'Clocks that we planted here last year came back this year as Fuschia. I knew that might happen. Anyway, here are some recent pictures from the baby garden.

I was advised (by my darling hubby) that he would not be moving it back there until I was 100% sure. I wonder how long she will sit here on the garage pad........hmmmmmmmm.
Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-222641890647740972010-03-22T22:32:00.004-04:002010-03-22T23:19:57.056-04:00Aging With the DogwoodEvery year, usually in March, I take a photograph of Bruce beside the Dogwood tree that we planted in our front yard in 2006. When we first bought this place it was a sand pit. There was no landscape anywhere and only freshly laid grass in the front yard. We put grass in the back yard. There were old trees around our lot but nothing ornamental. Although the change is stunningly amazing as each year passes, I use the Dogwood tree in the front yard as a point of reference. I like watching everything grow and change through time, but I have made it my "thing" to document this Dogwood from year to year. We have a couple Dogwood's that we planted in the backyard too but it's shadier back there and they aren't growing quite as rigorously. Below are a few photographs of this transition. (I swear to my husband that he still looks as young and handsome from year to year next to that Dogwood, and no babe, you aren't looking balder or grayer..........heheh...) Notice this year how brown the lawn still is and how warmly dressed Bruce is. It has been a L...O...N...G winter!

Say warm and happy gardening!!!!
Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-6392285358404497772010-03-20T21:04:00.008-04:002010-03-22T23:19:24.953-04:00Spring Is Sprung for 2010 !Today is the first day of Spring 2010! Has it really been a whole year since I have updated our garden blog? That is pitiful! Yes, I have been very busy since I started college almost 2 years ago. As you can see I haven't been gardening nor blogging near enough. All school work and no play is making me a dull girl! I promise to make a better effort this gardening year. I told my husband Bruce that he should learn how to update our garden blog too. He is much more knowledgable about plants and all than I am because he is a horticulturist. Hopefully he will get into it and this blog will be fun to read again.
We have had a particularly cold winter and it is still cold, still having freezes here in Florida well into March. Our gardening season hasn't really hit us yet. Bruce has been out there doing maintenance and cleaning up from the winter freezes. Many plants are starting to bloom now, a little later in the season than usual. Some are still blooming such as Camellias that are usually finishing up by now. It's been an interesting winter.
We've still taken lots of pictures so I will post some on here. We delayed our annual February/March trek to Tallahassee Nurseries because of the weather. We want to wait until they will have a full selection of plants and flowers for spring and summer. Maybe we'll go over Easter weekend. I need to get outside and prune all of the roses. I should have done that already. Our wholesale supplier of annuals went out of business this past year so we aren't going to have as many great and affordable choices as we usually had.
Here are just a few photos of what's blooming right now (I'll post more later!):

I know it's been way too long! I started going to college in August 2008 and there wasn't much time left to garden blog and hardly time to garden! But Spring is well on it's way and garden fever is hitting strong. Don't we all love this time of year.

Every year at the beginning of the gardening season, usually February or early March, Bruce & I head up to Tallahassee and go to all of our favorite nurseries. This year was no different! We went last Friday and had a blast. We went to Tallahassee Nurseries first. They really didn't have a lot of the new spring stock yet. We have had a lot of late freezes here in Florida this year so gardening season is a little behind. We did purchase, some Euphorbias, Southern Charm Verbascums and a "Sawada's Dream" Camellia and I got one unmarked Sedum that I liked. Oh, and we also got a Styrex tree "Silver Bells".

After we left TH, we headed to Espositios. Much to our surprise, we found "Pink Pearl" Azaleas there! We were tickled. We have been looking for them for a few years. We use to have them in our Brudaca Gardens and have missed them. Haven't been able to find them anywhere and even had nurseries looking for us. What a surprise to find them obscurely tucked away at Esposito's. We bought 11 of them. Can't wait to get them planted. We are going to dig up some Red Azaleas that our planted in the front of our house (they were purchased as a different Azalea, but were labled incorrectly). We will plant 9 of the Pink Pearl's there and 2 in the Baby Memorial Garden with the "Conversation Piece" Azaleas. We did see some new Azaleas at TH that we liked. They are Encore from the "Autumn series". Our favorites were "Autumn Princess" & "Autumn Twist".

While we were at Esposito's, we also got a "Sawada's Burgundy" Camelia that was on sale and some pinky-apricot Nemesias for the Baby Garden. Next we went to Native Nurseries. Bruce found some treasures there that he was real excited about. We got 3 Native Anemones and (I forgot what the other was, I'll have to look it up). All in all, we didn't buy near as many plants as we usually do on this annual trip, but we were happy with what we did get. The selection really wasn't very extensive yet and again, I think that's due to the late freezes. The nurseries really haven't stocked up yet. Also, Tallahassee Nurseries looked kinda messy. They haven't gotten cleaned up from winter yet.

We had a blast though. It was so wonderful to spend this precious time with my husband and doing something we both love so much. These trips are always great fun for us! Now, we will have fun getting everything planted. Bruce has already gotten half our vegetable garden planted for this season. I've been too busy with schoolwork, but he's very excited about it. We have some different kinds of lettuces, brussel sprouts, broccoli, strawberries......we also just a couple different kind of peppers and tomatoes to plant. We've ordered some leeks and I think Bruce planted some type of onion also. So, we are off to a start. Lots of work to do to get things open and breathing again and looking it's best.

Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-72336935908467502072008-07-28T21:11:00.004-04:002008-07-28T21:59:25.091-04:00Hot July in the Garden
I know it seems as if I have really neglected this garden blog, but really, it's July in Florida! Go get yourself a nice cold glass of Iced Tea and cool off. It's too darn hot to do much outside in the garden. So I admire it from afar, from the windows of our cushy air conditioned house. Really though, we get out there enough to do what absolutely has to be done and that's about it this time of year. It is much to hot and humid to enjoy much time outdoors. In the evening when it's cooler and I would go out, we are usually having one of our evening rain storms. Then the mosquitoes come to feast! They love me and if I am not completely doused in that horrible repellant, they will eat me alive! I do still take a meandering walk around the yard to check things out before I high tail it back inside. Here are a few photos that I took the other evening on one of those walks.

This is in the Baby Garden.

That is pink & white Gaura and & First Love Dianthus.

Of course, we have tons of Four O'Clocks blooming: Peppermint, White, Yellow, Fuschia, Pink, Peach and variations of all these colors. Our Crepe Myrtles are blooming, Roses, Cleome, Rudbeckia, Ritidiba, Buddleias, Rose of Sharons, Malvas. Jacobinia, Crinums, Daylilies and the list goes on. I have a beautiful view of the Baby Garden and some of the other gardens from my office window. It sure makes the day more enjoyable! Happy Gardening!

We also had some sad events take place in the past two weeks~but I am back to my garden blog, ready to seek the beauty in the world again instead to try to divert the sorrow. The most we've done in the garden the past two weeks is water (the couple days it didn't rain), fertilize, weed & Superthrive. We did go out to the wholesale nursery last week to get some Crepe Myrtles. We already had 5 of them but I wanted to see all of them while they are blooming so I could pick my most favorite ones and one for a prominent place in the front yard. This was really hard to do because they are all so beautiful! Alot of the colors are very close but just different enough that they have their own appeal and of course different growth habits. We came home with a 15 gallon Carolina Beauty which is for that prominent spot in the front yard. We also got a 3 Gallon Cinnamon Ruffle, 3 Gallon Burgundy Cotton, 3 Gallon Dynamite and a 1 Gallon Zuni. The Zuni we purchased as a gift for a friend. (I hope she doesn't see this before I give it to her! LOL!)The Burgundy Cotton was really my first choice for the front yard. I love this one so much. The problem is, it doesn't get tall enough for what we wanted out front. The Dynamite we already planted in memory of Eddie. Eddie was the 26 yr old (kind of x) boyfriend of my niece. He was killed in a car crash on June 12th. We bought and planted this Dynamite Crepe Myrtle in our front perennial bed in memory of Eddie on June 19th, which was the day of his funeral. It will forever be dubbed our "Eddie Tree", in memory of a life cut way too short. Sadly a friend of ours had a fullterm stillborn baby last week. We will be planting something in her memory in our Babies Memorial Garden. We haven't decided what we will plant for her yet. I want to give it more thought. We did get the 15 gal Carolina Beauty planted out front. The other's will have to wait a couple more days.

I wanted to beat the heat. Unfortunately, that meant I had to deal with an insane amount of mosquitoes. It rained most of yesterday (thank God because we really needed the rains we've had this week), so everything was wet and the mosquitoes were everywhere. I spent a total of 3 hrs out there and that was my limit. The pests were awful and it was really humid.
I have quite a few plants that I need to get planted in the baby garden but I am still having trouble trying to decide exactly where I want them and how I want it all laid out. I planted 8 Pink Sparkler Cleome, 3 Pink Jacobinia, 3 First Love Dianthus, 1 Karley Rose Pennisetum (Fountain Grass), and 1 August Beauty Gardenia. Bruce helped me dig up 5 of the Marcia Faye Daylilies that I want to move out of the baby garden (wrong color and there are 15 of them). I spent alot of time moving pots around, moving the statuary around. You can see in the photo below, this is my chair where I sit and stare (contemplating) at this garden. Then I'll get up and move something and then go back and sit and stare again. I cannot even tell you how many hours I have spent doing this since the beginning of this venture. I want so badly to dig it all up and start again. I know I wrote about all of that in a previous post so I won't go on and on about it now. So, I still have 3 Lullaby Daylilies, 1 Pink Muhly Grass, 1 White Buddlea and 2 Conversation Azaleas to plant. Hopefully I'll get them done this evening. I have book work to do the rest of today. There were many things flying in and around the garden this morning, mosquitoes, dragonflies, bees, butterflies, birds and hang gliders. No, wait, what??? Yes, you read it right! While I was out in the garden, I heard this very loud noise overhead and couldn't figure out what it was. A UFO perhaps or maybe a very rare giant bird! I looked up to see one of them motorized hang glider type thingys going right over top the garden. A minute later a second one went by. I can honestly say, I have never experienced that before. When living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, one day my husband and I were out in the yard when a hot air balloon went over our yard so close to the ground that it was hitting the trees. Nothing much surprises me anymore! Here I took a photo. Is it really a hang glider or is it a UFO, a rare large bird or really it even could have been a very large mosquito (they get bigger every day!)???I have to tell you about our feline garden buddy Timmy. We found him as a tiny kitten out in the garden one cold night the day after Thanksgiving in 2005. Bruce heard him crying and investigated. We found this very tiney, forlorn kitty and brought him inside. He had an injured leg and hopped around on 3 legs. We were afraid if we took him to the Humane Society he would end up being put to sleep. We already had 3 cats and never planned on having that many. We are just so soft hearted when it comes to animals. All 4 of our cats we rescued and 1 of our dogs. So we decided to keep him and nurse him back to health. Our decision at the time was that he would not really be "our cat". He would stay outside and we would feed him and if he left, that would be that. BUT, he stayed around and we let him sleep on our back porch at night. Then we'd let him come in and sleep in the house when it was cold. The end of it is that he is a very spoiled indoor/outdoor cat and we love him immensely! We had him fixed and he is always current on all his vaccinations. We had named him Tiny Tim after little Tiny Tim in the Scrooge story that had the crutches. Anyway, Timmy loves when we are outside in the garden. He hangs around and even digs holes for us. (Hmmm). This morning when I was out there he was being so darn cute and of course I just happened to have the camera there with me. So the following are some shots of him, just being Timmy.

Well, here are some photos of the one that I like the best, I think. The other two are identical to each other and so far I haven't gotten any good pictures of either of them. They are in more sun and in the evening it's been raining so it's been hard to get a decent photo of them. I am not really satisfied with those two and may make some changes with them. The pot above includes 2 Variegated Dianella (Flax Lily), 2 different Coleous, Black Alocasia (Elephant Ear), a rather large Variegated Rose Scented Geranium and some Maidenhair Fern to trail over the side. What do you think?

I took some pictures of them but it is much too sunny out and they don't look good. So, I'll have to go out late and take more pictures. I think the pots/container gardens turned out real good. When I post the pictures, I'll list the plants that are in them and the other plants that I got. Last night Bruce & I went to HD because there was a statue there that I like for the baby garden but I wanted him to see it before I bought it. He liked it too. The price was only $ 24 which I thought was great especially since it was true concrete and not the resin that starts falling apart after a couple years in the sun. Mom, as promised, here is a picture of that statue. It's not in the baby garden yet, it's just sitting out on the front sidewalk. I'll post more pictures of it once it gets to it's place in the baby garden. I haven't decided where that will be yet. Today Bruce & I had the day off together. We worked out in the yard for awhile but it was soooo hot. We lasted less than 2 hours and came back in. Now it's storming and raining, so him and the dogs are napping and I am on here as usual. I am really glad for the rain and the temperature dropped about 20 degrees with the storm. It was close to 100 degrees when we were out earlier today. Hopefully I will still be able to take pictures of the pots later. If not, I'll get to it within the next couple of days. We are off together tomorrow again and I think we just might go to Tallahassee Nurseries. Not sure yet but I would love it! Bruce will be working on Father's Day this coming Sunday so we will celebrate it tomorrow doing whatever it is he wants to do whether that be nursery hopping, antiquing or just plain nothing! I have to mention that my sister Stacy and brother Scott are both getting into gardening too this year at their homes. I love looking at all the photos they've been posting on their myspaces of their gardens. I have to get them talked into keeping a garden blog too! Happy Gardening everyone and as Rebecca Koles says. Here, I threw in a picture of Bruce, the best Gardening buddy a person could ask for!Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-22155367465963209812008-06-08T10:47:00.009-04:002008-06-08T11:56:32.143-04:00Sunday Morning Coming Down
Yesterday I went Garden Center hopping. Okay, so I only had time to go to the big box stores because I didn't leave the house until after 5:00 and all the independents are closed by then. Below is a picture of what I came home with this time. Most of the plants are going in some pots that I am putting together. They are Draceana, some different Coleus and Joseph's Coat (Alternanthera) Burgundy Thread. I have some other plants that are going in the pots as well. I'll show them on here when I put them together. I am still waiting to get a few other plants from our wholesale supplier. I also got 3 daylilies; Lullaby Baby, Minnie Pearl & Little Business and a Texas Sage. I am so addicted to plants. I think it's getting out of hand; plants and books....those are my downfalls. This morning I went for an early morning walk around the gardens with my camera. I love listening to the birds first thing in the morning. There was a pair of cardinals singing to each other and chasing each other back and forth amongst the trees. I actually got a picture of one by zooming in up into the tree with my little digital camera. See that speck of red in the tree???....trust me, that's a male Cardinal. (The males are brighter red for those that wonder how I could tell it was a he!) Below are some of the other photos I took of things that were blooming. I took 195 pictures and I had to narrow it down to just a couple to put on this blog. Don't you just hate that part. I want to share them all! This is the first Crepe Myrtle that we have blooming so far this year.

I'll be working out in the gardens today so maybe I'll have something interesting to tell you about later! Until then, Happy Gardening!Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-77952141646776425402008-06-01T21:23:00.004-04:002008-06-01T21:48:00.674-04:00One Rainy Afternoon........
We had rain, thunder & a little lightening for a little over 2 hours this afternoon. We were sitting on the back porch as I said in my earlier post, through the whole storm. Our little 5 yr old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Dudley, is afraid of storms. He did pretty good today considering. He mostly kept looking at me with that distress in his sweet little brown eyes. LOL! Poor kid. We loved on him, don't worry. He is babied constantly. Oliver, our 8 year old Boxer, could care less. He's like his mama (me), he can sleep through anything. The cats and our almost 7 yr old Australian Shepherd, Chloe were out in the garage (we have a pet room out there for all of them. The garage is their humble abode.) Chloe is deaf and mostly blind, missing an eye and can barely see out of the one she has. She feels the rumbles of the storm and is very sensitive to the vibration. The video below shows Dudley and also some of the rain and wind in some of the gardens out behind us. The large garden that is outlined in Liriope is Olivia & Quinn's Memorial Garden that I am up in arms about. Can't see much through the screen and with the rain and wind. Dudley sure is cute though. It is almost 10 pm and we are back out here on the porch, Bruce reading a garden architecture book and I am feeding my computer addiction. I think I can hear all the flowers and plants faintly sighing with relief and grateful for that long, tall drink that God just gave them.

Annettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370598666904767981noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2106327260702363970.post-60506006056826667492008-06-01T16:50:00.008-04:002008-06-01T18:27:04.606-04:00Baby Garden DilemmaWow! Is it really June already? Yesterday and today were the first really insanely hot days here in Florida this year so far. (Where we live anyway.) The Garden is starting to show stress from the heat and drought. We have been hand watering in addition to our regular irrigation just about every day and things are still dry. We are also having trouble with some moles or voles. It's very disappointing. There are tunnels all over our yard. It's like the NYC Subway. They eat off the roots of plants while searching for earthworms in their tunnels. This of course starts to damage the plant and it is starting to show especially in some of my rose bushes in our Baby Memorial Garden. I went out this morning to do some planting in the Baby Garden. All I managed to plant were 3 Pink Gauras. I just couldn't figure out where I wanted to place things. The whole garden is starting to look so hodge podge to me. I haven't thought it out well enough. As my husband says, I am an impulse plant buyer. I buy it because I like it and then I try to stick it in somewhere. But I think that's an okay way to garden. Hey, plants can always be moved, right? It's all about trial & error. The Baby Garden theme is pink for Olivia & White for Quinn. At first I had trouble finding alot of true pink plants. Now I seem to be coming up with an abundance of them. So far, these are the plants that we have in the Baby Garden:

2 Pink Serissa, Belinda Rose, Abraham Darby Rose, Our Lady of Guadaloupe Rose, Moonstone Rose, Sexy Rexy Rose, The Fairy Rose, a miniature garden rose, a Conversation Azalea, Mansize Camellia, Kitty Camellia, Pink Perfection Camellia, a Sioux Crepe Myrtle, Near East Crepe Myrtle, a Cameo Quince, a Blush Quince, a Pink Althea, Flowering Almond Bush, Hoshima Flowering Cherry Bush, Loropetalum, 2 Sago Palms, a Callaway Crabapple Tree, White Muhly Grass, White Nemesia, Nicotiana Flowering Tobacco, Appleblossom Pennestemon, White Four O'Clocks, Pink Four O'clocks, Miniature Mallows, Pink Hollyhocks, Liriope, Narcissus, Indian Hawthorne, Pink Celosiana, Evergreen Giant Liriope and Vygie Sedums. There are also 15 Marcia Faye Daylilies planted there that I am going to dig back up and move to another garden. They were not as pink as I was led to believe. They are very pretty but alot of orange, peach, yellow coloring to them. This morning I planted some Dauphin Gaura. I still have a Siskyou Pink Gaura to plant, August Beauty Gardenia, Pink Muhly Grass, Pink Cleome, some Zinnias and a few more roses. It sounds like alot but everything is basically small so the garden still doesn't look like much yet. I have a wish list of alot more plants that I still want to add to it. We also have a bird bath, two little statues and 2 little baby wrought iron chairs. I am just having such a time planning this layout. I think it's just soooooo important to me because it's my daughter and sons memorial garden, that I am not able to make it perfect enough.

As I write this, Bruce & I are sitting out on the back screened in porch watching it rain and listening to the thunder. Haven't seen any lightening yet and I guess that's a good thing since I am sitting out here with my laptop plugged in on the porch. Probably not the brightest thing I've ever done. We really need the rain but I don't think it's going to amount to much. It's coming in waves. The thunder is getting louder RIGHT now! Funny though, there are still birds chirping.

I joined Blotanist which is a collection of worldwide garden blogs. I am really enjoying it. I get so excited as I look at other gardeners blogs and read their stories. I have to say though that I realize that my blog really pales in comparison to most of the ones that I see. The photography on some of them is absolutely gorgeous so I find myself daydreaming about getting a really good camera so I can improve my garden photography which is something I love to do almost as much as the gardening itself. Also the blogs are so interesting. I find that most have a really good sense of humor, are very talented, and much excellent writers. I have a long ways to go here but I will improve over time. I am starting to really enjoy this blogging thing!

I didn't get to take photographs this morning because my husband had the camera at a job today but I will take some picture this week and show the perils that I am having with the baby garden. Does anyone else have a memorial garden like this that they've created? I would love to look at some pictures, layouts and ideas.

Well, my blog wouldn't be complete without some pictures and I just happen to have some that I took the past couple of nights.

Tonight, this bloom opened. It is half Fuschia and half Pink Peppermint on the same bloom. I am not kidding. It looks like I spliced this together, but I did not. Isn't it incredible?! There was also a bloom that had the Peppermint look with larger Fuschia striations on it. I love them! This is the only plant that I have seen this on to this degree. I think this plant was originally white and we had planted a fuschia one behind it. It is so cool what the mixing of the seeds is doing. I definitely want this in our babies, Olivia & Drayton's Memorial Garden! Does anyone else have blooms like this on their Fours? I've been growing them for years and this is the first I have seen this particular mix.

I was just too tired. I had some things that I needed to get done in the house anyway. But those of you who are addicted to gardening as I, will realize that it didn't take long....and I was out in the garden! I just can't seem to pass up checking out all my plant babies every day to see how they have changed since yesterday, and change they do.

Our Climbing "Souvenier de la Malmaison" rose which I was just deadheading last night had twice the blooms on it that it did yesterday. It looks great! I hated to see though that our spectacular "Seven Sisters" roses are starting to fade. They are so beautiful but the great showing only lasts for a few weeks and it fades away for the most part. Alot of the roses are kind of fading and getting ready for another bloom. It's kinda sad when they're in that in between time.

On the other hand our Gallardia "Desert Sun" just keeps spreading and is so cool. As I've said many times, Four O'Clocks were my Daddy's favorite and they are also one of mine. Bruce & I even got married at 4:oo in the afternoon just for that reason. It was kind of a sentimental thing. Those of you that don't know much about them, don't know what your missing out on. They are an old fashioned garden flower. They usually bloom after 4:00 in the afternoon and into the evening, hence the name. They are night bloomers and have a wonderful, sweet fragrance. They bloom all night and close during the day. When a flower is finished blooming it leaves a seed that falls to the ground and reseeds itself or gets carried and dropped in another part of the garden by a bird. I love to collect the seeds and use them in other areas or give them to friends. Butterflies & Hummingbirds also love them. They are easy to grow. They don't require alot of care, in fact they can withstand alot of abuse. They come in many colors now. They use to be found mostly in Fuschia or Yellow but now they are also Pink, White, Peachy, Broken Colors, Kalediscope. As a result of all these different colors, alot of them are what I refer to as 'Mutant colors" because sometimes you don't know what you are going to get from year to year. One year I took my mom some seeds and tubers from some Fuschia Four O'Clocks that were blooming at my father's grave. I brought them up to her in Pennsylvania and she planted them. They came up Fuschia. The next year they were yellow! That's one of the things that I also love about them. They are always full of surprises. In a particular area of our front yard we have a Fuschia one called "Limelight" planted next to a white Four O'Clock bush. The first year all color was at it should be. Last year the very same white ones were white but with a couple of faint pink specks or pink lines. This year they just started blooming 3 days ago and to my pleasant surprise they look like a pink peppermint. I have attached a couple of pictures below so you can see what I mean. Also, alot of our Fuschia ones have developed light pink or peach around the outer edges of the flower. Some of the whites have a pink stamen and then on another white bush they will have yellow stamens. I love the variety and the surprise! We also had one that hasn't bloomed yet this year but the past two years that one same plant had two color flowers on one plant; yellow and fuschia. I can't wait to see what it has in store this year. I know that I am very enthusiastic about my Four O'Clocks, but if your a gardener, then you understand this crazy love of plants. I get so much joy from them! Oh the simple things in life that God has created for us to enjoy! I know I will have alot more to say about my Four O'Clocks throughout their blooming season, so you haven't heard the last of me on this! Haha! Forgive the photography below. It had stormed and was still lightly raining and dusk when we took these pictures. Hope you enjoy them anyway! If you want to know anything about Four O'clocks send me a message. I'll be happy to help! I may even have some extra seeds laying around for you! Happy Gardening~

Wow! I can't believe it's been over two weeks since I've posted. As you can tell by my absence, we've been busy in the garden! I have to say that on Mother's Day Bruce took me out to the cemetary where my Dad & Granny are buried. I am always spreading Four O'Clock seeds out there and trying to get them to take hold and come back year after year, bigger and better. Four O'clocks were my Daddy's very favorite flowers. There isn't much rain out there and I don't get out there weekly to water them. But, when we got there, I was happy to see that there were some baby plants coming up. Just a few but that was better than none. We spread a bunch of seeds from our garden last year and watered everything. When we got back home it was early evening and I was elated to see that some of our Fuschia Fours & some Yellow Fours were blooming! That was a nice Mother's Day gift from God. Mother's Day is hard for me because both of our babies are in heaven and my mom is in Pennsylvania. It's a day that makes me feel lonely and just blah. Bruce always tries to make it special for me but the reality of it is what it is. So, having these other Fours blooming when we got home was like God saying he cared and my babies are there with him and wishing me a Happy Mother's Day. I will take some pictures of them tomorrow to post on here. I have some other photos to post. Let's see, which do I want to show you today........let me look through my photo album. By the way, we seem to have the grasshopper problem pretty much under control. We are seeing some here and there but not bad at all. Now the moles or voles......ughhhh, that's another story!

Every morning, there is something new blooming and every evening there is something that wasn't blooming in the morning. This evening, our first Four O'Clock bloom showed it's precious face! I knew it was getting ready and actually was surprised that is was one of our White Four O'Clocks that were blooming first. The white ones are more delicate. I usually expect the Fushcia's or Yellows to bloom first. The white and the pink ones are not as hardy. So, it was a pleasant surprise as Four O'Clocks are one of my very favorite's and was my Daddy's favorite also. I took a couple of pictures tonight to post them on here. Bruce & I also planted seeds tonight in the Baby's garden. We planted some Pink Rosa Cleome, a Pink Cosmos mix, White Four O'clocks and Pink Four O'clock's also. We also planted some White ones in the "White Garden" (imagine that!) The weather has been just beautiful. It's not too humid and hot yet and the mosquitos haven't been as bad the past week. They were really bad the first couple weeks of Spring.

There are quite a few that are blooming and if not blooming, in bud. I love roses so I always look forward to this. When my roses start blooming in the Spring, I start getting the fever and excitement of another season of dreaming of all the roses that are yet to come. Tomorrow, Bruce & I are going to the annual Gainesville Rose Society Rose Show at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. I'm very much looking forward to it. Below are just a few of the pictures I took of some of my favorite roses in the gardens yesterday. Enjoy!

It didn't stay hot very long and we got a cold front and the weather has been in the high 70's to low 80's again. Just beautiful. Tonight it is suppose to go down to 37! We also had some rain so everything is looking fuller, lusher and greener. We haven't had time to get out in the garden too much the past 2 weeks but that should change this coming weekend. I did take alot of pictures last week and I am posting just a few on here to show some of what's blooming. Hopefully, soon, I will have some more to write about on here but hope that you enjoy the pictures for now!

We planted a Red Maple tree, Drake Elm tree and a pile of Daylilies. We did alot of garden maintenance also. The weather was perfect! We love that Spring is here. I think it lasted for about a week! It's already creeping up into the mid to high 80's and getting humid. We finally had to turn on our central air conditioning today and close the windows. I hated to do that but it was time. Too sticky! The grass is looking so green and nice right now though. I love that! Over the winter it looks dead and brown and the past two weeks it just keeps getting greener and greener. Now I only wish we could head up to Pennsylvania and see all of our favorite Spring flowering trees, tulips, lilacs and all the great things that are starting to bloom up there this time of year that we can't grow here. Our roses are starting to bloom too. I had just given them a good pruning and fertilizing and the results are already showing! Love this time of year!

I told you that I was having computer problems....so that's where I've been. This whole blogging thing is really hindered when your computer isn't cooperating! So, anyway, today is the annual Spring Garden Festival at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville. Normally we love to go to this, sometimes as Vendors and sometimes as just one of the crowd. Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to make it today (sorry Mic!) Hopefully we can make it there tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. We hate to miss it. Haven't done a whole lot in the garden this week but that will change this weekend. I did take alot of pictures this week though. I try to document how things change and bloom through the months from year to year. Here are a few pictures here.......

Okay, so I have to show you this Dogwood on the day that we planted it 2 years ago.

I've had some serious computer issues over the past week. I still don't have it completely worked out but at least I can get on here a little now. It will be another week or two until things are up and running smoothly again. I left off on Friday....a friend of mine from Pennsylvania was here for Gatornationals. Her husband is on the pit crew for one of the race car drivers who is his nephew ( I think, or cousin). Anyway, we went Geocaching on Friday. It rained most of the day, but we did it anyway. She has been doing it for about a year, but it was my first time Geocaching. I loved it! It's like a treasure hunt. If you don't know about it, you should really check it out. Sunday on the other hand was absolutely beautiful Florida weather. Itr was actually a little too warm. Bruce & I worked in the Garden. Got a few more things planted, fertilized, pruned all the roses. It was around 80 and I got some sunburn. We saw alot of Robins in the yard and also a couple of Cardinals. There were 3 Giant Swallowtails on our MaryJane Nectarine this time! In addition to them there were a ton of Sulfurs. When I was done pruning the roses, I sat in a chair, hanging with the dogs and talked on the cell phone to my mom for an hour while Bruce kept working. What can I say, I just don't have as much energy as him, especially on a lazy Sunday! I did take a few more photographs as promised, of the MaryJane Nectarine in the backyard. I hope to get out there again tonight and get a few more things done.
